the remaining days of the spring break...
... i turned into a couch potato.
Save for friday afternoon, the rest of the days - thurs to sunday - was spent at home! Home alone, cos Sandy was hospitalized due to kidney stones in san francisco (or was it some other place) but thankfully they're both back now as i'm typing this (31 march) and he's much better too.
I watched two full seasons of America's Next Top Model (there was an ANTM marathon on this particular cable channel), and helped myself to the DVDs and watched The Phantom of the Opera, The Shawshank Redemption, part of Amelie, and watched 2 week's notice on one of the channels. Rest of the time i was flipping through the channels finding things to watch.
There's this comfy couch in the living room, and snacks in the kitchen. To sit there watching movies and TV shows without a care in the world, and look out of the window and see the ocean and sunset...whoa...i could live like this...
In any case, I must thank Seth (their son) and Whitney (Seth's gf) for constantly checking up on me to see if all is okay and whether or not i needed anything.

the day after ...
The day after i came back from the trip, I went over to school to get the pictures that noah had collected. I think it's a great idea for noah to bring his laptop over for the trips coz i can unload the pictures taken at the end of the day and start the next one with a fresh 2 gig XD card. So in a way, i can take as many pictures and videos that I want.
I'm still left with day 5 of the trip but i shall wait till i get the rest of the pictures before blogging about it.
Anyways, we decided to meet at the YMCA dorm, which is just across school. This was one of the places I had considered for my stay here in hawaii! It's a pretty neat place, and i tried my hands on Wii for the first time!

DAY 4 (c) - BIG ISLAND : Mauna Kea
Definitely one of the highlights of the trip for me - a visit to Mauna Kea. I don't think it needs any introduction, but just in case... here's another wikipedia extract:-
'Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, one of five volcanoes which together form the Big Island of Hawai'i. Pu'u Wekiu, one of numerous cinder cones on the summit plateau, is the highest point in the state of Hawaii at 13,796 feet (4,205 m). Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world when measured from base to summit, since its base is located on the seafloor about 19,000 feet (5,800 m) beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean, bringing its total height to about 33,000 ft (10,000 m). In the Hawaiian language, mauna kea means "white mountain", a reference to its summit being regularly snow-capped during the Northern Hemisphere winter.'
On the way up to the Mauna Kea. Before we went up to the summit we had to spend 30 mins at the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy, a small visitor center to acclimatise ourselves to the high altitude. Oops ok i didnt take any picture of the visitor center.
32 degrees F is exactly 0 degrees C!! It was 6 deg on Haleakala and i thought that was bad!
snow capped cinder cones located at the summit. It's already spring so the snow's receding and melting right now...

ok this is the closest i get to snow...haha actually it was just chunks of ice cos it was melting but i was real excited anyways!
f.r.e.e.z.i.n.g

Ok can't really see but our fingers were numb, wrinkled and all.. we kept going in and out of the jeep cos it was just too cold.

After the sun had set, everyone made their way down to the visitor center. Yoshie was nice enough to ask her tour group if we could tag along and join them in their star gazing session. We stopped somewhere along the way to the visitor center, got out and looked at the stars. I have never seen shooting stars before! Ha, and the milky way..and the planets and low orbit satellites moving across the sky at such great speed. The guide used a laser pointer and just pointed at the sky, and we could see where the laser pointer was pointing at cos of the dust in the sky that illuminated the path of the laser beam. I tried taking pictures but it was useless cos my camera couldnt do much under totally dark conditions.

and we left about 9pm at that night and made our back to our hostel. Next day ... hawaii volcanoes national park to visit places we didnt get to go to in feb!
